ABC: Discuss
At-A-Glance
With over 50 newsrooms across Australia, the ABC reaches communities nationwide, but building community goes beyond news coverage. Our team was tasked with creating a digital space to cultivate and celebrate local communities and sub-cultures. The result is ABC Discuss, a mobile app offering high-quality, judgment-free interactions through summarized content and self-moderation tools, designed to deepen engagement and foster meaningful connections.

The output for this project was an interactive prototype, project documentation, and poster.
The poster was presented to ABC Digital's product designers.

THE BRIEF
How can we carve out a space within our digital ecosystem to cultivate and celebrate local communities and sub-cultures?
DISCOVER
Understanding the brief
Our team broke down the brief into key terms to deepen our understanding before diving any further into the design process. We looked at existing literature on these topics along with some related topics on online community creation.
Community and Group size
Understanding these definitions gave us valuable insights into the dynamics within communities, which greatly informed our initial progress in the discovery phase of the project. For instance, we learned that group size significantly impacts engagement and cohesion. In larger groups, members are more likely to adopt an "audience" role, waiting for others to post, which can reduce overall engagement.
ABC Specific research
In addition to reviewing the brief, we explored the ABC, our collaborator, to better understand their extensive ecosystem. With so many services and functions, it was challenging to keep track of everything. Creating a mind map gave us a high-level overview of their core components and ultimately guiding our research approach. This led us to ABC Local, an initiative that segments news by suburb and highlights local stories.

Through ABC Local, we discovered a strong demand for community-focused content, despite ABC only featuring news from official journalists.
Competitive Analysis
With a clearer understanding of the brief and our collaborator, our team set out to explore current practices and initiatives. We examined media companies that engage in community-driven initiatives. To ensure a broader perspective, we expanded our scope beyond Australia.
Our analysis revealed a challenge in finding government-funded companies with community initiatives. The closest example was Rappler, a privately funded media company in the Philippines, offering "community rooms" for user interaction with guest speakers and topic updates.
We still needed a deeper understanding of user behavior and engagement within online communities. This led us to conduct interviews and surveys.
How are users currently engaging with online communities?
Interviews and Surveys
We conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 participants aged 20–30. We selected this age group because, according to ABC, they represent a key target audience that has limited engagement with ABC’s current offerings. The interviews explored four main areas:
1. Why users seek out online communities
2. How user define online community
3. Concerns and challenges of participating in these spaces
4. Users interacting online and its consequent effects on their offline relationships
Through the interviews, we were able to formulate more targeted questions for a larger survey of around 70 participants. These surveys were distributed accross reddit, quora, and instagram.
Interview and Survey Insights
-Users prefer to use smartphones to access online communities
-Majority would join a new platform if it discussed topic of their interest
-Majority trust other users and take their opinions at face value
- People are engaged because they want to learn and share their knowledge
DEFINE
User Needs
Through the insights gained, we identified core user needs, which helped us narrow our focus in the ideation phase.
THE PROBLEM SPACE
Design a digital platform that enables users to engage in niche communities with high-quality interactions, while ensuring a safe, judgment-free environment.

Concept Development
Crazy 8's, Worst Possible Ideas, and 6-3-5
The primary goal was to spark creativity and let our ideas flow. Although fun, the ideas generated weren't fully aligned with our problem space. We reconvened and employed the Worst Possible Ideas method. This technique led to explorations of privacy and ethics in online communities.

ABC: Discuss
We continuously refined ideas through our personas, merging and reshaping concepts to align with user needs—ultimately leading to ABC Discuss.
Our solution was two-pronged:
1. Entry Points from Existing ABC Products: We embedded discussion prompts in relevant ABC content—like news articles and  music channels—allowing users to seamlessly access ABC Discuss. This creates a unified platform for engaging with ABC’s diverse offerings.
2. A Standalone Discussion Platform: ABC Discuss serves as an independent platform, keeping users within the ABC ecosystem while offering safe, personalized content through filters, moderation, and persona profiling.
Testing the concept
As our team arrived at a potential solution, we wanted to test the concept as early as possible. The main goals were to understand user expectations and identify the potential user flow to ensure our solution would meet user needs effectively.
Although we didn't get the most valuable insights as we hoped, the concept testing still helped validate our concept.
Information Architecture
We laid out the platform's information architecture in order to establish a clear structure for the content and functionality. This ensures that the organization of information was intuitive and aligns with the needs of our users and our research insights.
Wireframes
To quickly translate our ideas into tangible designs, we began with sketches. These laid the foundation for our concept and were either refined or adjusted in the final version. Below are examples of how our wireframes evolved.
Design System
We aim to align Australia’s identity with ABC’s strategic pillar of “Reflecting contemporary Australia” in our design.
ABC Entrypoint
A call-to-action button will be displayed on the lower right accross the entire ABC ecosystem. This enhances discovery, providing a familiar access point.
AI and Manual Search
This acts as a personalized assistant for the user, designed to fetch infomration tailored to the user's interests.
Discover
The discover page aims to enhance user engagement by suggesting relevant communities and trending discussions based on location.
In Short
This feature serves as a condensed summary tool, providing users with quick and difestivle overviews of active discussions. This allows users to stay informed without getting lost in reading lengthy threads.
Discussion Prompt
Find discussion prompts in the discovery and community page. This keeps communities lively and prevents users from running out of things to discuss.
Content Moderation
The Content Moderation feature is designed to create a safer and more enjoyable experience by giving control over the content users view and engage with. Moderation comes in the form of Muting Words and Reporting posts.
Retrospective
What I would do differently
Overall, I am very pleased with the outcome of this project. As the culmination of my Master’s program, it was the first time we had full control to plan each step of the process ourselves. By balancing our team’s strengths, we were able to assign the right member to each phase, ensuring a mostly smooth project. However, if I could do something differently, I would have wanted to allocate more time for iteration. Although our solution was strongly grounded in research, additional iterations before presenting to the ABC Digital Team could have refined our approach and potentially led to an even stronger final outcome.
It's okay to be stuck
After our ideation session, we hit a creative wall. To reset, our team decided to meet in a new location for a change of scenery, which made a big difference. This experience taught me that it’s okay to feel stuck—sometimes all it takes is a change of environment to spark fresh ideas and get back on track. Being a designer also means staying flexible, as things won’t always go as planned.
The art of storytelling
When I presented to the ABC team, I only had 10 minutes to convey months of work. Imagine the challenge—how do you distill everything down while still making an impact? This experience taught me that being a designer also means being a skilled storyteller and understanding your audience. I had to carefully craft a clear, engaging narrative and adjust my approach to ensure the key insights and solutions resonated with the ABC team. I realized that storytelling isn’t just about presenting; it’s about tailoring your message to make your work meaningful and memorable to others.
